Urgent: Call your Representative to say NO to NDAA/SAVE Act The 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual appropriation bill for the Pentagon, will take $1.1 trillion of our money for more useless weapons, more imperialist adventuring, a bigger than ever “carbon bootprint,” and unprecedented military and intelligence links between the US and Israel.
And now it might kick millions of voters off the rolls, too.
This is because House Speaker Mike Johnson is attempting to add the so called Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act to the must-pass NDAA, ideally before Congress goes on their 4th of July break. Tomorrow, Thursday 7/2, please call your Representative and demand... - a NO vote on the NDAA, especially if the SAVE Act is part of the package.
- A NO vote on the SAVE Act any time it’s brought up before the House.
- That your representative introduce a version of Sen. Ed Markey’s Slash the Pentagon Act in the House. Markey’s bill calls for elimination of hundreds of billions of dollars of proposed Pentagon funding--$750 billion instead of the NDAA’s $1.1 billion or Trump’s call for $1.5 trillion. You can see what we could do for our children, elders, climate, and community if we move that money from war and war profiteers to real human needs here.
The so-called Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act) would radically change how people register or re-register to vote. Vote by mail and citizen voter registration drives would be eliminated—instead prospective voters would have to appear in person at an election office, and just a few forms of identification would be considered valid to prove US citizenship. Younger voters, lower-income voters, rural voters, and women who changed their names when they married would see extra bars to registering. The bill’s backers say the SAVE Act will prevent non-citizens from voting, but that is a vanishingly small problem. The real goal of the SAVE Act is to ensure that fewer Americans can vote, especially Americans who are less likely to have the time to register and the documents required.
