Now is the time. Friends, When I despair at how quickly our once proud democracy appears to be descending into the realm of fascism driven by Stephen Miller, the power behind the Trump throne who manipulates Trump’s narcissism, I recall the words of Tip O’Neill, the long-time powerful Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives: “All politics is local.” Election Day, November 3, is almost upon us. This is a critical opportunity to strengthen the bulwarks against fascism by electing strong progressive leaders. We each must get out and campaign for progressive candidates who are running in local, state, federal campaigns. And we must follow up with joining Get Out The Vote—GOTV—campaigns. Through connections build with neighbors, voters, friends, family and fellow activists, we must lay the groundwork for organizing what Rep. Lloyd Doggett and Professor Michael Shank call a “crisis prevention and response infrastructure” to support local democracy and mutual aid, to “better protect all of America from the next crisis and shock—be it political or planetary.” Time is short.
